The phone buzzed relentlessly on the side table, but Maha's hand groggily smacked it away. "Aiyo! Morning aagiduchu! Ippo late-aagaporen!" she exclaimed, sitting up in a flurry. (Oh no! It's morning already! Now I'll be late!)
Throwing on a stylish kurti and her favorite pair of jeans, she dashed to the mirror. A tiny kungumam dot found its rightful place on her foreheadโa quiet homage to her devotion even on hectic days. "Maha, nee modern-a irundhalum Tamil ponnu da!" she reminded herself with a dramatic flick of her wrist, feeling like the heroine of a soap opera. (Maha, you're a Tamil girl even if you're modern!) Her bangles jingled lightly as she grabbed her comb, tugging it through her slightly tangled hair. "This Yadav Kishore sir... summave sandaiku varuvaru... nimathiyave iruka vida maataru... daily oru new scene poduvaar! Enna koduma da idhu! Inaikum late-a ponena kaadthu kiliya thittuvare...." she muttered, rolling her eyes. (This Yadav Kishore sir... he's always ready for a fight. He won't let me live in peace. Every day there's a new drama! What kind of torture is this! If I'm late today, he'll roast me alive!)
She could already hear his sharp, condescending tone in her head. "Maha, punctuality is not optional," he'd say, with that infuriating smirk of his. "As if he's some perfection kaaran!" she grumbled under her breath. (As if he's some perfect person!)
As she dashed to the kitchenette, the smell of toast hit her. "Chithi, nee en uyir!" Maha declared dramatically, grabbing a couple of slices. (Chithi, you are my life!) "Vandutanga heroine amma!" Chithi teased, watching Maha juggle her bag, phone, and toast like a circus act. (The heroine has arrived!) "Thank you, Chithi!" she yelled before darting to the door. Her eyes landed on her best friend waiting patiently outside. Lathika waved casually, helmet in hand, perched on her trusty pink Scooty, sunglasses perched on her head like a VIP.
"Late as usual, Maha? Naalaiku venumna naalu alarm vaichukoyen?" Lathika teased with a grin. (Late as usual, Maha? Maybe you should set four alarms next time?)
"Alarm-a vachiyum naan late thaane! And now I have to face that Yadav Kishore sir again. Avanoda face-a paathaale enaku BP eridum!" Maha shot back, hopping on behind her friend. (Even with alarms, I'm still late! And now I have to face that Yadav Kishore sir again. Just seeing his face raises my blood pressure!)
The two of them sped off toward college, Maha's thoughts already bracing themselves for the inevitable showdown with "thalaivar" Yadav Kishore sir. She clenched her fists, muttering, "Yaanaiku oru kaalam vanthaa, poonaiku oru kaalam varum'ne solluvanga. But until then, naan porumaiya iruken!" (They say even a cat will have its day, just like an elephant. Until then, I'll stay patient!).
